Singapore | Tougher Laws to Protect Victims of Family Violence - a step in the right direction?

The Women’s Charter (Family Violence and Other Matters) (Amendment) Bill was tabled in Parliament on 9 May 2023 and passed on 4 July 2023. The Women’s Charter (Family Violence and Other Matters) (Amendment) Act 2023 (“Act”) aims to provide a more comprehensive framework to protect victims of family violence and strengthen the rehabilitation of perpetrators.
 
In this update, Director Hoon Shu Mei discusses some of the significant changes in law introduced by the Act, briefly discusses its similarity to the family/domestic violence laws in Australia and England, and highlights some of the practical issues which may be expected when the Act comes into operation.
