Alex has an active disputes practice. His counsel and representation are increasingly sought after by many. Alex routinely advises on commercial matters, private client matters and employment matters. He has represented clients before the Singapore Courts and international arbitral tribunals. Clients include multinational corporations, SMEs, C-suite and high net worth individuals.

Clients prize Alex for his unflinchingly clear-eyed analysis of their key commercial and personal interests in any dispute, as well as his pragmatic and strategic insights. Since joining Drew, he has been praised by clients for being “very smart in his moves”, “excellent” and “efficient”. 

Alex actively pursues his keen interest in the technology issues shaping our times, including artificial intelligence, crypto, blockchain and digital assets. Alex collaborates with industry figures as well as academics, including contributing thought pieces and speaking at events. He has also obtained a certification in digital assets. Alex believes that there is a need to go deep into understanding the technology and industry dynamics at play, instead of merely dispensing surface-level legal advice divorced from reality.

A highly energetic, personable and dynamic lawyer, Alex gives back to society by volunteering with the Singapore Mentorship Committee. This involves mentoring university and college students, with the hope of fostering the leaders of tomorrow.

Alex graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2013 with 2nd Class (Upper) Honours in 2013 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2014.

Some of the matters that Alex has handled include the following:

  • Successfully represented clients in a Singapore High Court suit involving issues relating to sham agreements and the penalty doctrine. The case is reported as iTronic Holdings Pte Ltd v Tan Swee Leon [2016] SGHC 77.
  • Acted in a matter before the Singapore International Commercial Court and successfully obtained unconditional leave to defend a substantial portion of claims on a guarantee. This was a case involving issues of good faith under Saudi Arabian law.
  • Acted for and advised a former head of a global banking division of an international bank in a high-profile case involving various employment law issues, including an employer’s duties of care and mutual trust and confidence, and handling of whistleblower complaints.
  • Acted for and advised a global technology company in various trademark opposition and invalidation proceedings before the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (“IPOS”), in a case involving disputes spanning multiple jurisdictions. The matter is reported as Suravit Kongmebhol v Aftershokz, LLC [2019] SGIPOS MED 1, and has been hailed by IPOS as the “first success case” under the IPOS Enhanced Mediation Promotion Scheme.
  • Acted for and advised a Singapore residential developer in proceedings involving an application to the Singapore High Court for leave to convene a scheme of arrangement meeting.
