Chong We is an Associate Director in the firm’s Dispute Resolution & Intellectual Property departments. He has a wide range of experience in litigation and international arbitration, including in licensing, investment, technology, and shareholder disputes, and has particular expertise in complex cross-border disputes.
Chong We has appeared before all levels of the Singapore courts and has acted in international arbitrations conducted under the ICC, SIAC, UNCITRAL, and HKIAC Rules. His clients include multinational corporations, investment funds, financial institutions, and high net worth individuals.
Prior to joining the firm, Chong We practised at major Singapore law firms (including with Senior Counsel) and at a specialist international arbitration boutique. He obtained his LLB from the National University of Singapore.
- Acting for a group of Chinese companies (including state-owned enterprises) in a SIAC arbitration against a Japanese licensor concerning a suite of patent license agreements, with more than US$67 million in dispute. Japanese law governs.
- Successfully represented a Taiwanese conglomerate in an ICC arbitration in Singapore against an Indian listed company in a joint venture dispute in the automotive industry in China, including obtaining a substantial costs award.
- Represented two affiliates of a major US multinational corporation in an UNCITRAL arbitration in Singapore against multiple Asian state-owned entities concerning the misappropriation of their coal milling technology under a licensing agreement. Approximately US$500 million was in dispute.
- Acted for The Kheng Chiu Tin Hou Kong And Burial Ground, a temple and Hainanese clan association, in winding up proceedings brought by the President of the Hainan Hwee Kuan on loss of confidence grounds. Reported at [2022] SGHC 36, and widely covered in the media.
- Acted for a group of investment companies and high-net-worth individuals in the Singapore High Court in relation to the recovery of their investments in the oil and gas industry through a series of exchangeable loan agreements, with approximately US$64 million in dispute.
